PLUNKET SOCIETY

OTAKI'S ANNUAL MEETING The annual meeting of the Otaki sub-branch of the Plunket Society was held recently in the Anglican Hall, Mr. L. G. Lowry presiding. » Mrs. Morton, president, in opening the meeting, asked all to stand in silence for .a minute in memory of the late Mrs. Buckrell, who had been secretary of the subbranch for a number of years, and who had worked long and ardently for the good of the Plunket Society. A welcome was extended to Miss Campbell, speaker for the afternoon, Mrs. Monk, Coastal Towns president, and to members of neighbouring sub-branches. Apologies were received from Mesdames Lowry, Witchell, Blake, Southcombe, Kirkwood, Jensen, Rhodes, Rule and Calwell. The reports of the president and secretary were read, and the balance sheet was presented. Mr. Lowry, in commenting on the balance sheet, congratulated the committee on the sound financial position of the subbranch, and urged all to rally round and help the committee to carry on the good work. Neate and Atmore, Mesdames Nicolson and Blake and Miss Holmes; committee: Mesdames Edwards, Elliott, Garrity, Harrington, Kirkwood, Lumley, Moss, Pothan, Roiri, Rule, Rhodes, Radcliffe, Reid, Southcombe, Saunders, Tooby, Williams and Miss Gilmer; hon. sec.-treas: Mrs. Mortiboy; hdn auditor: Mr. Witchell; delegates to executive: Mesdames Morton and Mortiboy. Mrs. Morton returned thanks for re-election as president, and a hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. Witchell, and the secretary (Mrs. Mortiboy) . Sprays were presented to Miss Campbell, Mrs. Monk, Mrs. Morton and Nurse Sclater and Mrs. Mortiboy. Miss Campbell, of the Health Camp, then gave a talk on her work, dealing with the care of cvacuee children in England during the war; which was very interesting and informative. A hearty vote of thanks to the speaker was carried by acclamation. Afternoon tea was then served by the committee. Annual Report The joint rcport by the president (Mrs. Morton) and secretary (Mrs. Mortiboy) was as follows: — "Another successful year has passcd and the work of the sub-branch is going ahead .steadily. Our annual cffort, despite very unfavourable weather, was well patronised and the sum of £73 was raised. As the bazaar is our main source of incomc, it entails a great deal of work by the committee and helpcrs, and we are indeed grateful to all who contribute in goods and donations towards making this function a success. "A new pair of up-to-date scales has been purchased for the rooms, and we trust are proving a help to nurse in her work. Mr. Moss made and donated a measuring stick for the rooms, and we are grateful for his kindly thought. "In January Nurse Brown severed her connection with the society to take up work on her' own account, and we were sorry indeed to lose thc services of such a capable and popular nurse. A farewell afternoon was tendered to Nurse Brown by the committee and mothers, who combined in giving her a parting gift in appreciation of seven and a-half years' faithful service amongst us. In February Nurse Sclater commenced her duties here, and we know that mothers will extend to her the same co-operation and help that is ncedcd to carry out her work. "Recently Karitane Hospital held a shop day in Wellington and the sub-branch sent down fruit and vegetables to help stock the -stalls. Wc have also made a donation of £■10. 10s to the Hospital Fund. "We wish t'o extend our thanks to Mr. Witchell, hon. auditor, Wilson's Pharmacy, Mr. Rule, Otaki Mail and all who have helped us to carry on the work of the society." Nurse's Report Nurse Sclater's report was as follows: — "The following is a report on the work carried out in the district during the year ended March 31, 1946, together with a comparison of the previous year's work: Visits to homes 248 (307), babies to rooms 473 (562) , children to rooms 136 (139), adults to rooms 566 (656),. new baby cases 44 (40), babies under supervision 61 (52), children under supervision 59 (55).
