LEVIN PLAYREADERS
MONTIILY READING PRESENTED The monthly reading by the Levin Playreaders was presented in the College Hall recently. The play was Val Gielgud's drama, "Ghinese White," and the producer, Mrs. J. Blafek, and her cast fully maintained the high standard which the Playreaders have achieved in their monthly performances. The scene of action in the plaY is Tan-Fu, a trading post in China, which has been successfully established by Leslie Dale (Mr. Bertrom) and is to be managed in future by the young and inexperienced Gerald Havelock (Mr. F. Baumber ) . Thfe only white people in the district are Gerald's wife, Sheila (Miss S Cameron) , and the Rev. Patrick James, a missionary, and his wife. These two roles were taken by Mr. A. W. Parton and Miss N. Mulcahy. Gerald's task is not made any easier by the return from the wars of the local bandit chief, "General" Wu-Tso-Ling (Mr. H. -Baumber), who has the entertaining habit of pferiodically looting Tan-Fu unless a his demands fdr money are met Si forthwith. Up to the time of his / departure, Dale had handled thfe general quite well, but Gerald is of * an impatifent character and fails to • make a hit with Wu. In the meantime; Sheila, who is very discontfented and despises her husband, has tfansferred her affections to Dale. Dale returns to Tan-Fu iri time to avert Wu's threatened raid, but during the parley betweeii Gerald, Dale and Wu. one of Wu's guards mistakes Gerald's intentions when he is handihg over his revolver to Dale, and shoots him on the spot. Sheila refuses to stay in TanFu aird marry Dalfe, and the fmal curtain finds her about to leave for Shanghai.
