One hundred leading Aniericans have urged President Truman to invoke Avar powers immediatelv to double .American food exports to the famine areas by a series of drastie orders which would require a teinporary change in American eating habits, says the New York Herald-Tribune's Washington eorrespondent. The appeal was sent to White House as Mr. LaGuardia received wortl from Vieiina that a sudden fall in food imports had compelled the authorities to reduce rations to 867 calories daily. The Polish Government has informed Mr. LaGuardia it has been compelled to j order the release of 20,000 tons of this jyear's seed grain for human consump- - "tion. This would reduce grain produc- ; tion bv 100,000 tons. ; Brigadier Charles Drury, Unrra chief j at Warsaw, described Poland's food i situation as desperate. Sporadic bread ! strikes were already starting. American j nutrition experts regard louO calories i as the absolute minintum for health.
