On Licensed Premises Llewellyn Bevan was charged with being found on licensed premises at Levin on May 3, 1946, at » time when such premises were required to be closed. Todd) was charged, firstly, with);1; selling mince meat containing ani" excess of preservative and;, Secondly«;h with offering mince meat for saleY '. The defend-'-.0'' fant pieaded guilty oir the first,icharge and not guilty on the sec-," I ond. | Walter John Guinan, health"I inspector, stated that on November 28 iast he visited the def endant's^ shop in Oxford Street and purchased a sample of mince meat. He^ f iwas served oy the defendant him-* ! self , who was informed that it was | intended to submit the sample to au ^ Itest as to its preservative content. 4 ' : He also pointed out to the defendjant that the regulations requiredi 1 the artachment of a label, which' ! was missing. The analyst's test 'revealed a preservative content of'.. 15 grains, whereas the regulations provided for a limit content of 3.5;"' grains. Counsel for the defendant contended that che regulation requir-' ing the- labeiling of - food referred toi i'ocd" sold in packages, and consequCntly did not appiy to a com'rmodity such as mmee meat, which . was not normally sold in wrappihgs. " He held that the reg-ulations were:far too obscure to apply to the case '. of mince meat. Referring to the-' charge of an excess of preservative^" content, counsel said that the meat. had been prepared by an attendant and not by the defendant. On the first charge the defendant was convicted and fined £5, with 10s costs, and decision was reservedi . on the further charge. Dangerous Driving Sue Wing, a market gardener at Longourn, was convicted and; fined j./ lus, wich costs 12s, for dangerj'ous and ex^essive driving whife- ; under the mfiuence of prepared' : opium. inspector Kehoe said that *he : had notieed the truck when it was . ; passing over the intersection in - Queen Street at a high speedU'sing the loudspeaker system, he ; called on the driver to stop, but he I uid not do so. He pursued the' truck and endeavoured to pass-, but wasuearly lorced off the road. He used ; his siren for approximately half a ' mile, bu'G with no efiect. He then i managed to pass the' truck and ran - it oxr ths road. ' j Traffic Breaches Leonard Alfred P'epper was charged with driving a car at exces- ! sive speed. He was convicted and | fined £5, with 10s costs. I Henry Love pieaded guilty to a • charge of driving a fully-loaded i heavy lcrry at a high speed along. ' uhe maiii Foxton Road. He was ! convicted and fined £3, with costs 12s. i R. T. Tindale was charged with driving a truck at rnore than 40 m.p.h., and was convici,ed and fined ' £3 10s, with costs 10s. j William Daniel Ward was charged j with driving a horsefloat at 40' ! m.p.h. when it was loaded with race horses. He was convicted and fined £5, with costs 10s. . Wandering Stock Brian Leslie Everton was charged ! with having two thoroughbred race I norses wandering about the roads. - The fault was not his own as tne i horses had managed to walk over a ! cattle stop. Convicted and fined 5s, with costs 11s. Illegal Fishing Net Patrick Aylward was charged with (a) taking undersized flounders and, i (b) using a net with a mesh oiQ ! only two inches when it should: j have been at least four inches. He ) jwas convicted and fined £1, with J 10s costs, on the first charge and ! £3, with costs 10s on the second.
