FIVE YEARS NEEDED TO MOVE OUT
Eeeeived Wednesday 7.0 p.m. LONDON, Alay 3. The evacuation of Egypt is estimated to take five years, largely because ot the vast amount of material to be moved, says the Daily Telegraph. The withdrawal would cover tlie whole ot Egypt but not Budan, Libya and Italian East Africa. There were 150 military depots in Egypt containing stores worth more than £12,000,000. The largest depots were at I'el el Kebir ancl Quassasin. The former has a circumference of 2S niiles. There were also great engi'neering works at Alexandria. The Times ' military correspondent sajrs there were alternative stations from which the Suez Canal and its approaclies could possiblv be defended but from the naval viewpoint there was no ■substitute for Alexandria. The British- offer was presumably mhde on tne basis that it was better to lose some strategic advantages than continue a systeni of defence based on bad relations and mistrust. Reuter's Ilaifa correspondent says the first shipmenl of lieavy military equipment from Egvpt, apparently marking the beginning of the British evacuation, arrived aboard the steamer Dunkery Beacon.
