ATTEMPT TO DERAIL TRAIN

DUNEDIN, May 8. A deliberate attempt which fortun ately wras unsucyeessful, was made to derail a goods train on the Kensington ovet'bridge on Saturday morning. a nuniber of wooden wedges were placed on the rails in such a manner that hau the engine been derailed, it would have crashed down into King Edward Street. As tlie engine came on tlie bridge u ran on to the wedges and rocked vjnlently but fortunately remained on the rails. Had it left the line, the resuH would have been disasti'ous. Evidence of further' tampering with the line was provided by the presence of wedges in the points leadiug to Hillside workshops yard, but these were discoverOd before they had interfered with the passage of rolling stock. There is reason to be lieve irresponsible youths perpetrateo these acts.
