LEADING STAKE-EARNER FOR THE SEASON
Flat-raeing for Ihe 1945-46 season virtuallv ended at Easter with Golden oouveuir uncliallenged as tke outstandiag horse for the period. lt lias been a reeord- brcaking season for Mr. E. JST. Fitzgerald 's four-year-old lialf-brotlier by Lang Bian to Kindergartens Golden Houvenir cnierging with the hitkerto unapproacked total of £10,565. fSprint honours rest with Mastcr Dash, wimier of the excellent total of =45785 for Mr. P. Ilouis, Wellington, under the direotion of the Trentham crainer, H. A. Telford. Weight has ineant iittle to Master Dash, whose reeord on Metropolitah coursos is hard to fault, his snccesses including tlie Members' Handieap, Great Easter Handieap and Tasman iStakes at Riccarton, and the Telegraph and City Handicaps at Trentham, while he was aiso placed in several otlier important events. Langue d'Or has been the biggest wiuner prepared at Awapuni, G. J. Thomson taking £-1995 with Mr. E. F. Ward's five-year-old Lang Bian gelding. Actually Langue d'Or earned a good proportion of his winnings in ininor plaee money, including a tliird in the Kew Zealand Victory Cup, and a second in tlie Wellington Cup. Langue d'Or has been threatened by unsoundness, lmt has stood up to his racing weli. Froiu now ou his opportuuities will be limited, but he should continue to be a payable proposition. ,Most all-round iniprovemeiit this season has been shown by lrish Note (£4904). it was as a sprinter that he shone earlier and in winning the Stewards ' llamlicap at Riccarton established a New Zealand reeord of 1.9 for. six furlougs. lie went on to win the Wellington Racing Club Handieap in runaway style, covering the mile and a half in a sliade outside the New Zealand reeord. He followed this up by downing Golden Bouvenir over a mile in the lirst running of the Trentham ytakes arter a great battie. Owing to a slight ailinent in oue of his joints his preparation was discontinued prior to Easter, but providing he stands up to liis work next season he should come to the fore amOng the stayers. Pride of plaee amoug the throe-year-olds goes to Bruce, a stablemate of Golden Souvciiir. By winning the Great Autumn Handieap, the Royal Cliief geiding brought his earnings up to £4245, and has proved a great bargain for his Wellington owner, ALr. r?cott Ramsay, wlio purchased liim for tlie modest sum of 170 guineas. This plaiii-looking geiding should be a power amoug the stayers next season. Balgowan has beeu the best winuer in the Takanini stable of F. J. Smilh, reLurning Mr. W. b. Goosman, M.P., £0900. The Coronach geiding is better endowed witli stamina than, most of his near relations, and it lias been in distaiiee events that he has made good.'. Fiiuuiciul (£3760) has done best on his lioiue eourse, Awapuni. Mr. . 11. L'dmuuds's iive-year-old Inffiition horse won three raees at Awapuni, the Manawatu Cup, Louissou Meuiorial llaii(|ieap and the King George Handieap, while tl;o Wairarapa Cup and Wanganui Earle Stakes were otlier sueeesses. When tried at Trentham •on'-thfee trips Finaiieial I'ailed to make a winning run, but on eouutry eourses he pro\ed a formidable rival, aud his tally is a good oue. Blue Trout (£2555) has been Ihe biggest winuer amoug tlie two-ycar-olds, and althougk she failed in Ihe test in the Clmllenge Stakes at Riccarton, she is partieulariy brilliaut and the Australian aiul New Zealand record-holder for live furlougs uitli 57 4-5see. Otlier liorses with good totals inelude Expanse (Auckland Cup and £0625), Foxhaven . (£0535), Royal A'ictor (£3500), Cowper (£3465), Al-Sirat (New Zealand JDcrby and. £3063), Tuis (£2947), Lady i'oxbridgo (Great Northern Derby and £2915), Westem Pront (New Zealand St. Leger and £2520), Majesty (£2500), Kindroon (£2455) and Arco (£2450). The higli stakes offering liave been the reason why there liave been so nian'y good wiuners this term.
