RUGBY AND BASKETBALL
SCHOOL TOURNAMENT An enjoyable day was spent last Friday when the schools of. Shannon, Tokomaru and Opiki combined in a football and basketball tournament at Shannon. It was a pity that the attendance of the public at the domain was so small, as some very fine football was played by the schoolboys. In the morning a seven-a-side tournament was played and the results were as follows: — First grade: Shannon "B" 6, Tokomaru "A" 0; Shannon A 5, Opiki A 3; Opiki B 11, Tokomaru A 0; Shannon A 18, Shannon B 0;. Shannon A were the winners. Second grade: Opiki B 5, Shannon C 0; Opiki C 3, Tokomaru B 0; Shannon C 12, Tokomaru B 0; Opiki B 9, Opiki C 0; Opiki B were the winners. Mr. ! D. Aitchison and Mr. Jeffery were the referees. • In the afternoon Shannon defeated a combined Opiki and Tokomaru team by 6 points to nil. 'Scores for Shannon were gained by P. Wilkinson and M. McEwan. The basketball fixtures were played at- the Shannon school and the results were as follows: — Shannon A beat Tokomaru A, Tokomaru A beat Shannon B, Shannon A and Opiki A drew, Opiki A beat Tokomaru A, Shannon A beat Shannon B, Opiki A beat Shannon B, Shannon A beat Opiki A, Tokomaru A beat Shannon B. Opiki A were the winners with seven points, Opiki A were second with five points and Tokomaru A with four points was third. The headmasters of the three schools were present, Mr. Dickinson (Shannon), Mr." Calder (Opiki) and Mr. Bond (Tokomaru), and each were accompanied by a lady teacher, who had charge of the basketball teams. After the splendid tournament held on Friday it is hoped that the three schools will hold these triangula'r tournaments more often.
