KING'S HORSE IN TURF SENSATION
LONDON, May 4.. The King's horse, Hypericun, in winning the One Tlionsand Guineas at Newmarket, provided one of the greatest sensations in the history of the Englisli turf. The race resulted:— Hypericun 1, Neon Light 2, Iona 3.. Thirteen started. Qne and a-lialf lengths; three-quarters of a length. Time, 1.41 3-5. •"Hypericun swerved as the horses wert walking to the tapes, threxv her jockey (Douglas Smith) bolted three-quarters of a mile round the eourse, which she left and made towards Newmarket town. Onlookers, hoivever, intereepted Jier at the back of the. stands. A maii mounted her and, with another leading her, she was taken in the direction ot the barrier. Smith, who was driven in an amlni lanee to meet the fllly, remounted he and rode lier back to the barrier. As Hypericun was none the worse foi her escapade, it was decided to allow her to start. She agaiu swerved when the barrier rose, but she soon settle., doivn. There was terrilic clieering from tlii large crowd when it was seen • that slu was gaining uiuler. the jockey Js pres sure. Bhe passed the favourite,. Neon Light in the straight and went on to a comparatively easy victory. Prineess Elizabeth witnessed the race.
