RAGGED JUNIOR GAME

EASY WIN FQR WANDERERS | K ! Some very ragged football, inter- ! spersed with -several brilliant moves, was witnessed during the junior' game at Levin between Wanderers and Tokomaru, which Wanderers won by 29 points to nil. Tokomaru were very unlucky in that their first match of the season should be played, against probably the strongest junior team in the competition. Bciascia was the prominent back, scoiring three tries and setting his backs ;in motion after practically every scrum. Broughton also did good work, but often'spoiled a possible scoring mov.ement by holding a little too long. The forwards were .fairly evenly matched and both the packs worked hard, but Wanderers hodked the ball from most of the scrums. The score was a fair indication of the state of play, which sometimes .proved monotonous with its regular'ity of scrums and lineouts. ^ j*i v'._ M tm The Teams The* respective teams lined out as follows: — ' Wanderers: Ropata (captain), -Paki, Graham, Remeni, Broughton, S. Simon, Sciascia, Short, Winiata, Jones, Marshall, Hughes, Nahone, W. Simeon and Eparaima. Tokomaru: McDonald, Wenman, L. and N. Simpson, N., S. and E. Cooksley" (captain) , Anderson, "Wiiliams, Wilton, E. and B. Turner, Thomas, White and Steventon.

The Game Tokomaru kicked off into a hazy sun and quickiy foiiowed up, hue for an infringement a scrum was set down. Wanderers liooked the ■ ball to their half, Sciascia, who sent it on to Broughton, who cut through and kicked over the full backs. head. Sciascia, who had foiiowed up, gathered in the ball and scored in the corner. The kick failed and the score for the first five minutes stood at .3 — O.in Wanderers' favour. Fiuctuating play foiiowed the kickoff and 'the game was kept around .the half-way line until Brougnton again kicked through and foiiowed up, but the ball was groundcd a second 01* two before he arrived. The kick was taken from. the twenty-five and Tokomaru, raced the ball through to Wanderers' line, but Ropata cleared with a long line kick. Anderson, a Tokomaru player, received an injury, but responded to treatment by the St. .John's men. This player was unfortunate, for he soon received a further knock and had to leave the field. The ball was thrown in and Sciascia kicked along the line, Paki following up fast to just miss a try. The ball was kicked out on the full and a set scrum was formed. On receiving th'e ball, Sciascia set the Wanderers backs in motion and threw a long pass to Graham, who nearly lost the ball but raced over in the corner. The attempt fell short. Play continued around the Tokomaru twenty-five and a penalty was awarded to Wanderers for1 an .opposmg player . coming round the scrum too fast. Winiata 's kick 'fell short." 'Paki foiiowed up once again and narrowly missed scoring before the ball was forced. Half -time came soon after with the score Wanderers 6, Tokomaru nil. Some ragged play foiiowed the resumption and then Sciascia sent the ball to Broughton, who raced Hkrough, but was dragged down a few feet from the line. A scrum was set and the ball came out to Sciascia, who worked the blind side and dived over. The try was unconverted and the score remained at 9 — 0. Another try qnickly foiiowed with the ball travelling from Sciascia to Graham, who made a brilliant 40 yards dash and scor'ed in 4he corner. The kick failed. Wanderers 12, Tokomaru nil. The ball then came out to Broughton, who beat his man ar& kicked Tor a gap, the ball rolling over the line to be rforced. The ball then came back to Sciascia who kicked through again and made a fine solo run to score close to the posts. V/iniata added the titbits making the score 17—0. Wanderers were having. the game .practically their own way and after some severe scrummaging tne ball travelled along the „ backs to Ropata, who had come up'from full back, and he scored near the corner. *Winiata's kick fell short. The, hard working forwards then pushed through with the ball at their toes and Winiata added a further three points. The kick was not taken and soon -after, the fcall-went to Remeni j on the wing, and he brought the total to '26 — G. The try was -uncon- ; verted. Sciascia again sent tlic j backs away and Graham scored in] the corner, and as this was not j added to the final score was* 29— 0. ; Mr. R. Broughton ably contrblled ! the game as the re'feree appointed to the match did ,not make an. appearance.
