BOWLING SEASON ENDS

RAUMATI CLUB'S FUNCTION After a very successful season the Raumati Bowling Club ceased operations for the year on Saturday. The weather was perfect, and a large number of local and visiting bowlers and lady friends were' present. The green was in splendid order, seldom, if ever, better, and consequently games were both keen and enjoyable. Among those present were a number of Wellington bowlers, including Mr. Guise, the centre's president. During the day afternoon tea wes served, and appreciated.

Mr. Cox, president of the Raumati Club, stated that the day was a most memorial occasion for the club, as it was the end of the club's first season's activities, which, it was gratifying to state, had proved a very successful one. The club had naturally gone to a good deal of expense, but it was pleasing todmow that it had been recompensed for its formation. It had been opened successfully, and members by their activities had made the club what it was. : Iri dealing with the activities of the club, he made ,particular mention of the general committee, which had been a happy team with only one object in view, that of making the club a success. A special tribute was paid to Mr. Stan Moffatt as secretary (applause), who had proved- of the best for secretarial duties. Thanks were also due to the match committee, Messrs. J. Hooker, E. Frankish and J. Beckett, who, although they might have had a worrying time, had accomplished much, while to the refreshment committee, Messrs. J. Eggers, E. Edridge and A. Hawkins, much credit was due. What would bowling be, said Mr. Cox, 11 there was no afternoon tea? The ground committee, he said, had also done good work, and one had only to look at the beautiful grounds to see the result of their labours, therefore, to Messrs. F. Vango, A. Grimes, E. Graham, A. Maclver and F. Tyrer, thanks were due. The splendid work of the green supervisor was much appr.eciated, hut'it was regretted that he had been ill. . It was the wish-of club members to see him restored to perfect health Mr. Moffatt had taken up the duties in the meantime and had done so in a most capable manner, and it was recognised that he'had accomplished good work. It was point'ed out that such an official as green supervisor worked both early and late; tiietefore, to both Mr. Gar.dener and Mr. Moffatt thanks ;of members were due. Another army of workers which the 'club could not afford to overlook were the ladies, who had permitted their husbands to partake in bowls. -Without the ladies there would be 110 bowls, despite the fact that it was a man's game. Their assistance, which had been freely given, had been appreciated. To players, apart from Raumati, Mr. Cox expressed thanks for support, and stated that their visits had always been appreciated, while through them many friendships had been made, and enjoyable games resulted. Mr. Cox spoke of the wonderful support given by - the Wellington Centre, of which Mr. Guise was president, and it was with pleasure that centre members were welcomed. Mr. Cox regretted that it had been found impossible to present badges, etc., won, but these would be presented later. Trophies were then presented, amidst applause, to the following: — Rinks championship : H. GiffordMoore, G. Hay, W. Beer and J. Hooper (s) . Pairs: F. Tyrer and E. Frankish. Senior singles: K. Morrison. Junior singles: F. Smith. President's cup: F. Graham. Trophies had been donated by Messrs. A. Freeman, G. Shore and Gifford — Maori (cup) . A presentation hat was won by George Shore. Mr. Guise, president of the Wellington Centre, stated that it gave him pleasure to be present with some of his confreres, and he was pleased to know that the club had had a most successful season. He' congratulated the club for the

st.rides made, adding that it was a decided credit to have such a body affiliated to the centre. The members were .all r good fellpwjs; ^could give. a: j oke,, take a . jag,; and.; remain 'the best of friends. A glowing tribute was' paid to ladies in general, who,' all- l-ecbgnis'ed, were of great assistance to^-the club and could not be done without. He spoke of the ifibdesty of som§ of the club's members; and paid tribute to the fine work he knew had been accomplished by members. Congratulations .were also extended on account of the green, recognised as a very fine one, and in conclusion he wished the- club continued' success. (Applause) . Cheers were given for the centre, after which Mr. Cox stated that the club's annual meeting would be held on June 29.. He then declared the season as - officially closed. Play was again indulged in- aird watched with -considerable interest by a large number of spectators, ladies pr-edominating. It was ■ evident that the ladies were greatly interested, while it is probable that a green will .be -available for them before another season is .past. The officials of the club, with Mr. Moffatt as seqretary, and Mr. Cox, as president, are .to be congratulated on .the oap.able -way arrangements " were 3 carried out. The grounds, pavilioh,"etc., are a credit to the club, which has only had one season, and success was attained by unity, and help otherwise. Among the wisiting bowlers present were Mr.- L. G. Lowry, M.P., General R. Young, president of the Otaki- Club and several other- members.- :
