LIGHTING TROUBLES

Few of us who watch a film casually ever realise the immense difficulties and problems which beset even the most frivolous scene. Aside from the never-ending troubles of recording and "shooting" the scene, there is the constant "mike shadow" to contend* vfith. Travelling on a boom; the microphone has to follow the players as ! they move about the set, catching ' the smallest whisper. Strong bright i lights behind the- set - tnrow me ! smallest object into black relief, andj the moving sound beam is a constant worry to 1 cameramen and technicians. Occasionally the shadow can be filtered with a spotlight or used for special effect, but this is rare. Most of the time it dances around the set and thoroughly enjoys the frantic efforts of all concerned to keep it out of camera range.
