Finding j himself on the losing end every : time, Andrews took a job at a pet$ol istation, where his bosses intrigued ! with his looks and serious study of j dramatics, paid him 50 dollars a j week for three years to concentrate on acting, and earned a 20,000 dollars profit over their investment ' when he landed his first film coni tract. Day, 1912, as the son of a minister. ■ At high school Dana went in for ! dramatics, debating and football. ! At college he starred in psychology, ; law and English. | His stage career began at the : Pasadena Playhouse, where he ' graduated from a spear carrier ;in 1936 up to speaking parts and later to feature parts. In October, 1938, i oue of Samuel Goldwyn's talent ; scouts saw and liked him. Goldwyn | signed him to a contract in- DecemI ber, 1938. Having no parts for Pana i at the time he allowed him to con- | tinue at the Playhouse for almost a j year, during which time he played j many important roles. Beginning with a minor role in ; "The Westerner," a Goldwyn pic- ; ture starring Gary Cooper, Dana's ' contract was then shared by 20th Century-Fox, and after appearipg ; in "Sailor's Lady," "A Wing and5 a Prayer" and other pictures, he got ; his big chance in "Laura," which 'lcd to a part in "State Fair," t|ie Oscar Hammerstein musical, ajad l then to "Fallen ' Angel." -Z !
