LOCAL AND GENERAL

^ 1 ' ' ?ersonal Mr. E. J., Graham leaves on Monday on a business^ visit to Dunearn. Mrs. Fife, who has been on a five weeks' holiday in the Auckland district, arrived home on Friaay after a most enjoyable sojourn. Mrs. White-Scott is still on holiday in the-north. Mr. A. R. Rudkin; for some years on the staff of the 'Otaki State School but now in Auckland, has retired-from teaching, and is living privately in Onehunga. Unfortunately, Mr. Rudkin has been in very indifferent health for some time. The death took place on Wednesday last at Palmerston North, of Miss Adeline Cordella (Dahlia) Manins, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Manins, of Wellington, at the age of 68 years. The deceased had lived for some years at Otaki, where she was well-known as an ardent church worker, and was respected by a large circle of friends. The. funeral took place at Palmerston North on Friday. Patriotic Ball The patriotic ball, to-be held at the Otaki Railway Hall on May 24, promises to eclipse any such similar function ever held in Otaki. Arrangements have been made at considerable' expense to secure Arthur's orchestra from Wellington, a combination of six players that is claimed to be equal, if not better than any such organisation in New Zealand. The supper arrangements will be on a lavish scale, under -the supervision of Mrs.- Royal, and in this department visitors will be well catered for. Tnere will be a plentiful supply of claret cup and other- liquid refre'shments, novelty dances, etc., while flashlight photos will be taken. The decorations will be on a large and attraetive scale, and should appeal to all. Returned soldiers should apply to Messrs. Mortiboy, R. Bills or F. Edwards for their tickets. It is fully expected that there will be a. large number of visitors from Palmerston, Wellington and intermediate districts, and the committee promises a most enjoyable time.
