POST-WAR BACON SUPPLIES TO BRITAIN
PIG COUNCIL'S PROBLEM ' One of the economie probiems which the Wellington District -Pig Council had to face during the yea'r, Jtiat of post-war supplies to Britainand Europe, was referred to by the chairman (Mr. B, E. Keiller). in hte annual report to a meeting of the council in Levin this week. "Early in 1946," said Mr. Keiller, "the Minister announce.d a request from the United Kingdom for xncreased supplies of bac.on. The council dealt with this matter in some detail, pointing out to the Minister the f ollowing salient f acts : — Firstly, that unless adequate grain supplies were assured it would oe impossible to increase the quantity of bacon; seeondly, that rathe,r than strive for increased bacon sup.plies, It would be better to give. thefarmers a free. hand to produce either bacdn or" pork "aceording to the capacity pf their farms, but at the same ti'me they- should be encouraged to produce a maximum output by an inerease in prices; and, thirdly, that if the Government would give an increase in prices, the eouneils would .be will- - ing to recommend dropping the crop subsidy scheme and the winter premium payments."
