SHANNON BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY MEETING The fortnightly meeting of the Shannon Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. ThoSe present were: The Maypr (Mr, R.= E. Downes), Crs. W. Clayton, R.. R.' Lind;. J. A. Roach, H. Ait'chison, D. Higgie, J. Curran and C. Wishart. The health officer reported on repairs required on a residence in Vogel .Street, and it was resolved to notify the owner with' the view* to having the work carried out. y The council gave provisionul approval of sub-division LOt 43 and part Lots 44 and 45 on the corner of Ballance and Margaret Streets for the State Housing Department. .It was resolved that the tender for the supply of metal for the borough be let at 9s 6d per yard. It was agreed that the finance committee should meet on May 7 to consider the estimates for the year. Cr. Lind spoke at some lengthr outlining the position of the present power shortage, and. stressed the poiht 'that the co'nservation of power was most important. Mr. Clayton's motion that the Levin Pipe Band should be written to and thanked for their generous service in assisting the town at local functions, was carried. Cr. Aitchison reported that the Shannon Football Club was unable to secure wire for f encing off the - playing field; and suggested that if the council had wire available it? should be loaned to the footballers for the season. Cr. Aitchison said that it was rumoured that if the playing field was not f enced, the Horowhenua Union may refuse to allow games to' be , played in;.Shannon. ' Cr. Lind said that if tlie ' counc'ii could not supply the wire perhaps the Shannon Sports Club would loan it. Cr. Wishart reported.; on the Shannon Fire Brigade meeting and stated that there was some difficulty in obtaining uniforms for some of the firemen. The Mayor asked Cr. Wishart if it .could not be arranged to hold a function in order to obtain funfis. He stated that the brigade were rendering a good service to the town, but unfortunately they were not getting the publicity and consequently the support from the public that they should get. Accounts amounting to £52 18s lld were passed for payment. •
