RUBBER FACTORY AT UPPER HUTT

WELLINGTON, April 28. A tvre factory at Upper Hutt costing £450,000 is part of a £1,500,000 manufacturing coneern to be formed in New Zealaiul by Dunlop Iiubber, Ltd., which. will have a majority holding in the undertakiug to be known as Dunlop, N.Z., Ltd. It is intended to spend £900,000 on inac'hinery and buildings and two factories will be operated. The production of tyres will be eoncentrated at Upper Hutt, where 500 liauds will be employed when the plant is in full working order, and there will be an allied rubber products factory in Christchurch, employing about 150 hands. These plans were announced by Mr. Philip Proctor, who has been appointed managing director of Dunlop, N.Z., Ltd. Mr. Proctor said todav that the trend in the last 15 years had been for small secondary industries to start in different countries. That was particularly notieeable in South America, and it had been proved that tyres could be produced' economicall'y with a low output if production were eonfmed to a simplified range.
