Shopping for Country People
The closing of country schools fdr one day a month was suggested to the .Southland Education Board by a deputation from the management committee of the Southland branch of the New Zealand Educationa-1 Institute. By closing orie day a hionth, teachers, parents and children in country districts would, it tvas stated, be given an opportUnity to do their shopping. Mr. L. B. Galbraith, a member of the deputation, said that attendances at country schools were affected to a large extent by the introduction of the 40-hour week. NoW that shopping tentres were closed all day on Saturday, people were forced to do their buying during the week; The board decided to refer the matter t'o the Department of Education.
