ULM'S SON VISITS "SMITHY" SET
A visitor to the "Smithy" set while the 'film was in production, Flying Officer John Ulm had a very strange experience. He met the actor who was creating his father's role 011 the screen — John Tate. "It was one of the strangest experiences of my job in the film. Certainly the resemblance is excellent, and he seems to have captured many gestures associated with my father." Charles Ulm, Smithy's life-long friend and partner on most of his record-breaking flights, lost his life while attempting to fly to INew .Zealand. Young John joined j the RA.A.F. in the early years of [World War II and had his share of excitement. John was immediately recognised by Smithy''s old friends, [and he bears a startling resemb[lance to his air-pioneer father. | Introduced to John Tate, he jcracked: "I suppose I should call jyou Dad?"
