LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

OTAKI DOMAIN Sir,— I like "No Idiot's" opening; he is fair. As for his conclusiou I do not thiiik it'; is according to Marquis of Queenberry rules. If he will ask anyone in the Dominion associated officially with amateur sport what can be made out of it, the answer will be a debit, balance representing. Intangible ' expenditure. *"No Idiok" should remember that sincerity has been described as the first of virtues that no mortal should lose sight of on nis onward path through life.. It would sfcem now that "No Idiot's" informant is leading him up the garden path. Never has it been suggested that the fence should extend so far south as he would have us believe. It would probably be an asset to the Otaki Athletic and Cycling Club, as it would alford protection to both spectators and competitors alike. "No Idiot" is a bit of a sparring tourist. In his first letter he started with myself, then 'through two members of the council he finished up in Riverbank Road. Now he is sympathetic towards the council and wants them to have a rest from the domain. I think the ; council has rested , on . ' the domain long enough. In 1941, before we could commence the cricket season, the members of the Otaki Cricket Club had td -clear an area for "a pitch with a scythe, and at that time the Otaki Domain was a disgrace. Today there is a special sowing of. grass for a wicket, but' it is not'fit for use. A good wicket could be levelled on the spot with the use of a bulldozer. The Department of Agriculture paid the council " the cost of replacing. the fence and the timber for its construction is lying in the council yard at the present time, and has been there for about five months. Did the council procure the timber because it was not wanted? "No Idiot" makes it look as if the fence we are awaiting is like the illusory fortune at the foot of the rainbow — the more we. scramble after it the further off it a,ppea,rs. So might it be — but the confirmed croaker is beyond repentance and reform. Yours etc., ' • ! , -. T. V. CAHILL'. ' Otaki, April 24. [The several viewpoints on the above subject have now been well' discussed, and with Mrj. ; Cahill's reply the correspondence is clos:ed. — Editor.] • . ■-
