DOCTOR AS HIS OWN GUINEA PIG

Reeeived Tuesuay, 7 p.m, , LONDON, April 23. British scientists were their own guinea pigs for experiments in chemical warfare, says the Daily Mail. Dr. Hamilton McCombie, head . of the Cambridge research team, offered himself for the test of one of his own discoveries which blinded him for ten days. The discovery was a chemieal, fiuorophosphonate, which would have been Britain 's first reply ifi the Germans had introduced chemieal warfare. Fiuorophosphonate has no illeft'ects on its victims for three or four days. Then a temporary loss of vision develops painlessly, due to the contraction of the pupils of the eyes. Old people recover .after two or tlirea days, but young people take twice or . tbrice as long. Dr. McCombie, after recent visits to Germany, expressed the opinion that British respirators would have given adeqqate protection against anything the Germans had.
