Mr. Thomas Thompson, chief Panama Ganal geologist, has begun recruiting geologists to make surVeys preparatory to extensive alterations. to tlie canai. The surveys will determine the prac ticability of a number of propo'sals aimed at making the' canal less vulnerable in wartime. Mr. Thompson said tlie most proniising proposal Avas to eliminate the locks and con vert the canal into a sea Ipvel waterway. This would involve history 's greatest excavating job and require tlie lowering of Gatun Lalce whicli at present is 85 feet above sea level.
