CHRISTCHURCH, April 22. The Acting' Minister of Finance, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in a statement today, said that those ex-servicemen and ex-sprvice-women who desire to use the whole or portion of the moneys in their gratuity account, for any of the purpose.s named in regulation 10 of - the War. Service j Gratuities Emergency Regulatiqns 1945" and thus olxtain the beneilt of a 5 per | cent. discount which is available under 1 the regulations, may • now do so. "It will be recalled," said the J Minister, "that. the regulations provi.de | for a discouaxt of 5 per cent to be paid j on behalf of- the depositor,- where part or all of the money in a/war gratuity ! post ofliee savings hank aceou'nt, is with t the consent of the Minister of Defence, j applied to certain purposes for the j benelit of tlie depositor. These purI poses, as sat out in the regulations, i are: — " (A) for the purpose of purehasing a home or furniture or any other real | or personal property for the investor. "(B) For the purpose of establishing the investor in any business, professioii, trade or oceupation. " (C) For any other purpose approved by the Minister. "Persons to whom payments will be ! made will be either Government dej partments or iirms and individuals, and j arrangements. hpve- bebri m'adff for each department to dea-1 with its ow.n cases and for the Relrabtiitation1 Depantment to deal with th.ose cases where payment is to be made to a firm or individual. " The Minister pointed out that the effect of the regulation is to enable a debt of sav £100 to be discharged by j authorising the withdrawal of £95 from the gratuity account and at the same time applying for th& remaining £5 tp be paid out of the war expenses account. Any ex-serviceman or ex-servicewoman who wishes to take advantage of the discount coneession, should therefore apply to the department concerned where the amount to be paid is due to the Government. If, on the other hand, the debt to be discharged has been; incurred with a lirm or individual, application should be made to the nearesi ofliee of the Rehabilitation Department.
