' ' The present Government proposes that the Waikato and allied iVIaori trihes shall he grant'ed £5000 a year - in perpetuity as Gompensation for lands confiscated in the Maori war,-. and as 10 years have passed since the c'laims were first made the grant will he retrospective to that time," said the Prime Minister (Hon'. P. Fraser), addressing a large gathering of Maoris at Ngaruawahia- during the weeksnd. He said that the offer meant that the Waikato trihes would receive £6000 annually for 50 years and thereafter £5000.- THe offer was accepted on behalf of the Maori people concerned.
