Wishart.. ; The town clerk (Mr. Bovi's) advised that .sanction > had been granted by the Local Government Loans Board for the council to borrow up to £350, to be known as the Waterworks Loan, 1946, for the payment of repairs carried out to the waterworks caused by recent floods. At the request of the Transport Department it was agreed to forward a copy of each driving license issued by the council to that department. A letter was received pointing out the unsatisfactory condition of the footpath on the south side of Vance Street. After a discussion it was agreed that the matter should be left in the hands of the works committee with power to act. A coi^ of the Gazette and maps showing the position of the changed electoral boundaries was received. It was stated by the Mayor that protests could be made to the commission over the changed boundaries, but it was agreed that a protest from Shannon's point of view was unwarranted. It was suggested that the council should communicate with the Horowhenua County Council in regard to the tar-sealing of the Mangaore Road, and if that the council intended sealing it was agreed that the Shannon Council should seal its section of the road. With reference to a letter received from Mr. F. W. Vickerman, managing director of N.Z. Woolpacks and Textiles, Ltd., relating to the formation of a transit - camp at Whitanui, it was agreed that the Mayor and town clerk should represent the council at any conference called between local bodies concerned to discuss the matter. In the meantime the matter is to be held over. Tenders are to be called for the supplying of metal to the council. It was agreed that a public meeting should be called on April 24, at 8 p.m. in the council chambers to arrange a suitable send-off to Mr. W. H. Behrens, the postmaster and Sister Willis, the district nurse, who are leaving the district. After a discussion it was decided to close the public reading room all day on Saturdays. Also that the public library be closed on Saturday evenings, an extra night being arranged for Friday evenings at the same time. During the librarian's holidays the library will be closed from April 19 until May 1. Subscribers will be provided with extra books to cover the break. Accounts amounting to £89 7s 3d were passed for payment.
