ARCO PLEASES IN AWAPUNI TRIALS

Altliough. eonditions were against fast times at Awapuni yesterday morning, Easter-engaged horses who worked well were Areo, Langue d'Or, Yandra and Voltaic. Among the (jumpers Red Glare was most impressive. The eourse proper, with the pegs -out 35 feet, was available for galloping, the going be^, ing soft;after recent rain. Yandra (Broughton) and Mary Jo (Aitken) opened proeeedings by running seven furlongs in 1.41 2-5, the last three furlongs taliing 43sec. The former linished in front and was doing lier work very eoniiortably. She is a greatly iutproved filly and is not without prospeets in the Great Northern Oaks in which she will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. Emerge (Saunders) aud Duteh Mary (Waddell) were let off with an easy three furlongs > in 45sec. The latter has faiied to handle the going in .recent starts and may be seen to better advantage over Easter. An interesting trial was that between Areo (Boreham), Langue d'Or (Seliars) and Lady Spiral (Waddell). Jumping away fromt the' mile post, Areo aud Lady Spiral quickly opened up a big gap on Langue d 'Or, and they rau to the five furlongs in 1.13. Over the eoneluding stages, the latter put. in great work to finish on terms with his companions in 1.52 4-5. Areo appeared to liave most in reserve, .. and the Hawke's Bay Cup winner is likely to be a firm favourite for the main event at Feilding ou Saturday. Langue d'Or will have an outing in the sprint on Saturday prior to taekling the Feilding Cup on the middle day.

The two-year-old Skilled (Bowness) proved too speedy for Hakim (Amey) over three furlongs in 40 2-5sec.
