FLYING FASTER THAN SOUND
WASHIN G-TON, April 14. An aircraft designed to exeeed the speed of sound is being developed in California, aecording to the Associated Press, although the Navy Department only admits that- an aircraft with instruments for recording aerodynamie forces at "previausly uuattaihed horizontal speeds" is being built. , The Associated Press reports that German documents reabhing the Arniy Air Force 's experimental station at Wright Field reveal' that the Gennans were working on an athodyd' engine, which depends on the "ram" effect of its speed to compress . the air in the eombustion chamber.' ■ ' The athodyd engine is believed capable of giving. speeds up to 3000' miles an hour. ' Another German aircraft sfcill in the design stage was expected1 to fly at l'TPO miles an hour at a hei-ght of 100,000 feet.
