AUCKLAND, April 15. Proposals to iill the gaps in waterside labour with volunteer citizen emplbvfnent With a view td-hastening the lcadihg of food ships for BHtain by worklng at night thrcfitgh the Easter holidays wfere made by a deputation of Auckland citizetis who waited ofi the Mayor (ilr. Allum) this morning. The siiokesmafi for the deputation, cofi'iprising nine tnen and one Woman, was M r. A. M. Gould, a bartister and solicitor, whb eifiphahised that there WUs no political sigfiificance in the deputation 's activity. It was purely afi effort to coopera,te with organised labour to expedite the despatch of food to Britain. On the suggestion of the Mayor it was agreed that he f oi' ward an urgefit telegram to the Prime Minister (Mr, Fraser). This would urge. that the food ships be wdrk'ed rofifid . the; elock . in' .the Easter holidttys, - and tlfat the watersiders be asked to Wofk accoi'dingly. Further, that as it \vas not reasouable fo exjrect t'he watersidea's to work long hcurs unaided the members of tlie general public be invited to assist. An official stateuient from the Auckland Waterside "V^,rorkeTS, Ufiion was not available this morning, although it was cofiitneuted that no invitation to reiiresentatives of the Union to be present at the meeting had been received.
