LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

RAYMOND S.

DOWNES.

Sir,— May I through your columns reply to the letters of "Dave" and Mr. A. R. Mills, concerning the article written regarding the public meeting held to discuss what form the war memorial for Shannon should take. Both these gentlemen object to the term "shades of Snake Gulley," one from civic pride of that fictitious town, and the other from the polht of view that it was a personal alfront to those who attended the meeting.

The way in which "Dave" stated his case left nothing in doubt that "Snake Guliy" was a mosl attractive town in which to live. He also went into detail to describe the people that live there, their civic pride, etc. I presume from his report that they would have jammed the local hall to the doors if such a thing as a public meeting to decide a war memorial was held in that centre. However, in spite of the "build-up" which "Dave" gave Snake Gully, I personally prefer fact to fiction, and would much rather reside in Shannon. Despite the lethargy Shannonites show in many local affairs, their generosity is above reproach, but they should for their own good, not leave matters to a minority to. decide for them. Regarding any affront to those present at the meeting, I wish to state that as a whole none was intended. Mr. Mills must admit that early in the proceedings there was something that seemed of an inter-commit'tee disagreement re=

garding the building of a public utility for which funds had been raised. This and other matters of varying importance, I contend, should not have been brought to this meeting. In conclusion, ; the people present at the meeting must be congratulated, firstly, for their interest in public affairs, and, secondly, for the decision arrived at, that is the erection of a memorial hall. I only hope that the article in question has served the purpose for which it was intended, that is to create more interest in the chief topic of the meeting— a memorial hall for Shannon. Yours etc.,

Shannon, April 15.
