WELLINGTON BOWLING CENTRE

A meeting of the Wellington Centre was held on April 9. As a mark of respect to the late Mr. R. Turner, a foundation member of the Johnsonville Club, those present stood in silence. The treasurer's statement showed a credit balance of £393 13s 3d, and an account for £63 15s , 2d green' research was passed for payment. In connection with green research, Mr. Horton forwarded an itinerary for visits to eighteen greens within tlne centre The Karori Club applied for perrnission to hold a two days' tournament on April 19 and 20. The'president reported that permission to hold the tournament had been given and the action was approved. Mr. Moffitt brought under notice that in at least one instance a junior champion was unable to play in the junior singles as he was also included in the champion rink of the club concerned. The president intimated that this was unavoidable owing to the number of postponen.ents. A letter from the Council of Sport, which had been held over from the previous meeting, requesting the affiliation of the centre with the Council of Sport, was considered at length and provided a general discussien on the merits and demerits of the aims and objects of the Council of Sport. The president and others submitted that the centre should consider supporting a body which was endeavouring to assist sports bodies generally in obtaining supplies of necessary working material, etc. Mr. Casey intimated that the New Zealand Bowling Association and a number of centres were included in the list of those affiliated to the Council of Sport. Other speakers contended that it would appear that an effort was being made in some measufe to control sport, and that careful consideration should be given to the proposals. before affiliation was decided upon. It was urged that in the nieantime no decision be arrived at. Mr. Barton Ginger moved "that further consideration be deferred until the next meeting of the centre, and that a sub-com-mittee consisting of Messrs. Guise, Casey, Hornig, Emmett, McKenzie and Barton Ginger be appointed to make enquiries regarding the rules governing the constitution and aims and objects of the Council of Sport, the sub-committee to submit a report to th.e next meeting of the centre." It was seconded by Mr. Parton and carried. * The president reported that Mr. G. A. Hayden, of the Seatoun Club, was at present in hospital, and it was agreed that a letter should be forwarded to Mr. Hayden expressing sincere sympath'y in his indisposition. Mr. Andrew Fletcher reported that the Rationing Controller had been interviewed regarding the allowance of tea and sugar to bowling clubs. The Rationing Controller intimated that he was quite sympathetic to clubs' requirements, but the position regarding suppliqs of tea and sugar was mostT aifficult, and that with the supplies available and in sight, it was not possible to consider applications for further issues. The controller intimated. that he would, however, consider any , reasonable applications in connection with' opening and closing days. Mr. Kornig stated that in connection with the New Zealand bowling tournament, the controller had intimated that liberal supplies of tea and sugar would be granted. The president intimated that he had visited the new club at Waikanae, where good progress was being made in connection with the formation of the green. With Mr. Gilbert he had visited Vogelmorn. where the difficulties had seemed unsurmountable, but were being faced in a praiseworthy manner; Kilbirnie, where one green had been sown and the second green was being prepared; and Miramar, where the work in connection with one green was weil m hand anc the prospects of an early opening next season were evident. Meeting of Delegates A meeting of delegates to the Wellington Bowling Centre was held on the same date. The president reported that a number of rules were .apparently conflicting, and submitted a number of proposed amendments, which it was hoped would clarify the position. Mr. Barton Ginger stated that a number of rules were ambiguous, and moved that the amendment proposed by Mr. Guise for a complete overhaul of the rules of the association be forwarded to the N.Z.B.A. as a remit. This was agreed to. "In view of the number of amendments made in recent years to the rules of the N.Z. Bowling Association, and the apparent number of ambiguities therein and the necessity for having the amendments incorporated, the N.Z. Association be asked to set up a committee to make a complete survey of tpe rules and amendments, and draft such further amendments and alterations as may be necessitated by the alteration of its constitution." Mr. Fletcher stressed the desirability of all remits from the centre being considered at the March meeting and this was supported by a number of those present. The following nominations o'f officers of the New Zealand Bowling Association were received: President: Mr. Thomas Lock; treasurer: Mr. W. F. Hornig; councillors: Messrs. Matthew J. Casey, Joseph Norrie, B. A. Guise. The N.Z.B.A. advised that the election of councillors should be taken between May 10 and '24.
