RAHUI FOOTBALL CLUB

SOCIAL AND DANCE A club that deserves the thanks of the community in general and servicemen in particular, is the Rahui Football Club, which catered for its many overseas members from the start of the war, fareweiling quite a number, and welcoming home those returned, Several social functions have been held and presentations made, while welcome homes have been very enthusiastic.

On Friday night at the Railway Hall, another very successful function was held in the form of a sociai, when there was a splendid attendance,. terpsichoreans enjoying the music provided by Billy Larkins' well-known and popular orchestra. Supper and other arrangements v/ere admirably carried out, and credit is due to tbe members of the club. There were fifty-three returned servicemen of the club present, together with their many relatives. Mr. H. G. Wylie, president of the club, in the course of his remarks, stated that the entertainment was mainly for the ladies who had done much for club members throughout the war period, and he trusted that all present would spend a pleasant evening. He concluded his remarks by thanking all who had so willingly assisted the club. , Mr. A. Gillespie, president of the Horowhenua Rugby Union, thanked the club for extending him an invitation to be present, and then congratulated the club on the success of its several functions. He extended thanks to the ladies who had done so much for servicemen in the district generally, and judglng by comments-it was very evident that the Rahui Club was one that had done much and deserved "all praise possible, It was, he said, regarded as "the best co'untry club in the Dominion."

Mr. L. G. Lowry, M.R., after thanking the club for its invitatiori to himself and Mrs. Lowry, stated that it was a pleasure to be able to be present, despite the many call^ made on his time. Mrs. Lowry, however, • was' unable to keep up with the pace, and had reliictantly been forced to stay-away." Mr. Lowry congratulated not , only the club, but its lady supporters, refer^ ring to the fine work done by them. To cater for over fifty members was a task, but it had been ably done. Christmas and other gifts had been sent by the club to, men who had been abroad, and parcels had proved very acceptable, at the same time showing that the men on service had not been overlooked. Mr. Lowry, in conclusion, trusted that the men returned would again take up healthy pastimes. During the evening interesting

and greatly-appreciated items were rendered by the popular "Ink-pot Sports.'/ Among the items that brought forth- applause was the dancing by Miss Anna" Young and Miss Audrey Wilson. Mr. Carkeek was an able M.C. Members responsible for the function" were congratulated on all sides for their splendid. work. Another function, the final, will be held at no distant date.
