POLAND ACCUSED BY BRITAIN

The British Control Commission in Germany accuses Poland of driving out ' old and sick Germans and pregnant i women in defiance of the agreed repatriation conditions. j The British charges are made in a i strongiy-worded reply to official Polish i allegations that Polish displacqd persons returning home under the repatrii ation operation have been iil-treated | Ln a British transit camp. ; The British Control Commission, after refuting the Polish charges, declares of Poland "It is clear that there is a selection of a German minority and t'he least useful part is being expelled. " A special investigation confirmed that Poiand was not observing the condxtions laid down for deportees. The matter would not become a subject for a Four-Power discussion. Germans from Poland received in the British 2 oue to April 6 totalled 171,402. 'i'lie statement gaid that these were in addition to 136,144 who entered between October, 1945, and February, 1946. There were a number of deaths of people too old and too sick to stand the journey. Many were so ill that thsy had to be taken straight from the train. to hospital. Births occurred on the trains and -the deportees were not receiving one day's rations. The scanty baggage supported the charges that insuflicient notice of eviction had been given. Many were robbed ; on the way.
