APPEAL BY MR. ATTLEE IN FOOD CRISIS
LONDON, April 10. I Mr. Attlee has sent letters to the 1 Lord Mayors, Mayors, and chairmen of j councils and food committees throughout the United Kingdom seeking sap- • port for intensification • of the cam- [ paign i'qr saving food because the ioodj position has not improved as quickly ! 'as was hoped. ( Reports from AmeriGa show that the amount America will he able to export i might he smalier than was expected. -• j Mr. Attleq's letter says thqt the appeal is necessary because "the wbnd| is confronted with oue of the greatest ; food crises in history." Declaring that only the most strenu- 1 ous efforts pf all tqe nations would save j millions of lives Mr. Attlee addeqL, j "All the importing countries, including | the Unitpd Kingdom, have had t0 j accept drastic reductions in impprcs of wheat. Everything is being done to ensure that these reductions shall not have a serious efi'ect on the standqrd of iife of our people, but the need to avoid waste and to substitute other foods for bread wherever possible is of paramount importauce. " Urging strong measures to avoid waste, Mr. Attlee asks for intensiiied cultivation of garden allotments.
