ADVISORY COMMITTEE MEETS QUESTION OF ACC OMMOD ATION A meeting of the* Horowhenua College Advisory Committee was held on Tuesday evening. The chairman (Mr. F. H. Hudson) presided and there were present Mrs. C. Bartholomew and Messrs. W. G. Clark, E. D. Bell, D. P. Todd, G. Matthew, A. C. Kennerley and F. Haley (acting-principal). . The chairman referred to the resignation of Mr. W. V. Dyer, chairman of the Wellington Education Board, due to family circumstances, and expressed on behalf of the committee appreciation of Mr. Dyer's services and good wishes for his future. .. -
Corresponden.ee with the Education Department in connection with the appointment of staff to the col--,. lege was read. In answer to questions on this subject, Mr. Haley read the section of the Secondary and Technical School. RegulUtions dealirig with the appointment of staff, which stated that the principal must always be consulted by / the controlling authority before appointing staff. The use of the College Hall by various organisations was discussed at some. length by the committee, and at the suggestion of the chairman the question was deferred until the appointment of a new principal. . It was decided also that a charge for the use of the hall' be levied on the Levin Playreaders, the fee decided on being £2 2s a month, with special charges when the full dress shows were staged and the public charged for admission. It was resolved that the use of the hall must be by appointment with the principal. . In accordance with a request by the Levin Playreaders, it .was decided to carry out alterations to the doors below the stage in the
hall, provided that the cost w^s borne by the Levin Playreaders, and that the alterations were not j unsightly. „ ... Mr. Hal.ey informed the eommittee that a gramophone, with a comorehensive selection of, records, was required for the teaching of musical appreciation provided for m the new syllabus. It was left to j Mr. Clark and the acting-principal to deal with the purchase of the gramophone and records. Mr. Haley then raised the question of accommodation in the school, referring particularly to the lack of space in the arts and crafts room, and the shortage of lockers for the pupils' books. ' After a short discussion, the committee decided that a thofough investigation into the accommodation situation was necessary. A motion was passed recommending that the department's architect visit the school to discuss the matter with the principal, and that the board should ■give attention to the situation forthwith-. Accounts for the previous year and past two months were read and accepted.
' Acting-Principal's Report The acting-principal then read his report, stating that the roll on April 1 was 453, 225 boys and 228 girls, representing practically no change from the previous year's figure. There were several staff | appointments to report. Mr. G. Hall ; had been appointed to replaee Mr. H A. Heron, and had taken up hisl duties on March 1. The new engin- 1 eering instructor, Mr. W. Hall, would , eommence his duties at the begin- J ning of the next term. It had been impossible to obtain a manual , training Home Science teacher to ; replaee Miss Gillingham. Mr. Mer- i cer would recommence his duties on | May 1, subject to the approval of , his doctor. An effort had been made to recommence night classes and the present roll was 100. , - „ . . The position - regarding the college lawns was still unsatisfaptory. A letter had been- received from the Levin Borough Council on the subject. The college motor mower was still in a local garage, but efforts were being made to expedite its repair. Arrangements had been made to have the football grounds harrowed and top-dressed, but the work had been held up by the weather. The time had come to appoint a groundsman to take care of the college grounds, this work having been done in the past by the boys of the college.
On March 20, the advisory committee visited the college and made an inspection of the various departments. Messrs. Horn and Bell gave the necessary authority to pnoceed with the harrowing and top-dress-ing of the football grounds. The report was received by the committee. The question of the appointment oi a groundsman was discussed and a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. Todd, Kennerley and Clark was appointed to deal' with the matter. Mr. Haley asked for the attend-ance-of the members of the committee at an Anzac service, to be- held at the school on the afternoon of April 24. In reply to a question, the actingprincipal said that the position of principal of the college had been advertised . in the Education Gazette, but there were no other developments in the matter of the appointment of a new principal.
