Per^onal Mr. and Mrs. Noel Algie of Pahiatua spent the week-end with Mrs, Algie's parents at "Te Maire," Shannon, and also renewed old acquaintances at the Koputaroa Schooi jubilee. Mr. and Mrs. Sherwood, .of Wellington, were the week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. L. H. Best, Kingston Road. Another Wellington ^ visitor to Shannon was Miss Willis, who spent the week-end with her sister, the district nurse, Miss Willis. Miss Willis, who for eight years has ministered as the district nurse to the ills of the people of Shannon, Opiki, Mangaore and Tokomaru, has received advice of her appointment as matron of the Awapuni Home, with which is incorporated a chronic cases' hospital. Miss Willis expects to spend a few days leave before taking up her new duties towards the end of the month. Euchre Tournament The winners of the Labour Party's euchre tournament, held on Friday evening, were Mr. Robinson and Mrs. R. Andrew. A Correction In Monday's issue it was stated that the Presbyterian Church harvest festival was held last Sunday. This is incorrect. The harvest" festival is to be held next Sunday, April 14. Jet 'Plane's Visit Great interest was taken by the public when the Gloster Meteor jet 'plane passed over the town early yesterday afternoon. The aireraft made three circles over the town and came down very low to enable all to get a good view of the machine before it proceeded on its way to Foxton. Welfare Committee Formed At a public meeting held in the Renown Theatre on Monday evening a Welfare Committee was formed to administrate surplus patriotic funds in this district. The object of the committee will be to deal with cases of hardship suffered by .ek-servicemen and women and their dependents. The committee of five members ' elected was as f ollows: Messrs. J. D. Campbell, R. Hook, R. E. Downes, R. R. Lind and V. Batema'n. This committee will represent Shannon. Similar committees will be formed at a later date in Tokomaru and Opiki, and an executive of five members will be set up from the three areas in which Shannon will ha^e two representatives and Opiki, Tokomaru and the Shannon Returned Services Association one member each. Industry for Shannon Sin&e the citizens of Shannon met some ten days ago to promote industries in this town things have movect rapidly. This week a start will be made • to instal electric power machines in a large hall over Mr. Tippler's shops in Ballance Street. This will constitute a branch factory of a Wellington firm engaged in the manufacture of men's clothing. Already six girls have been engaged, three of whom will go to Wellington in a week's time for three weeks training in operating the machines, and on their return they will instruct the other three girls. When a start has been made a further three girls will be taken on and trained and others engaged as required. It is expected that this enterprise will be ready to start operations on May 6. It is understood that enquiries are being made by other Wellington manufacturers as to the available essentiai perquisites for industries in Shannon. '
