PARAPARAUMU NOTES
(From "Chronicle" Correspondent) ' A lovely sunny morning favoured the lahding of the huge "Lodestar" aeropl'ane. on the Paraparaumu aerodronie, bringing'Lord and Lady Louis Mountbatten and party. The children were brought to the aerodrome in school buses and had an interesting; time' inspecting the giant aircraf t. and. its smaller escort. Later their hearts were filled with joy at being granted a half-holiday by the distinguished visitors. Children and adults too, will long remember the visit of this gracious couple, who walked abqut chatting and smiling among the spectators. The W.D.F.U. of Paraparaumu held its annual April meeting in the Anglican Hall, presided over by Mrs. Hercock, who, in a short address, thanked her committee and members for their splendid work and co-operation throughout the year. Mrs. Jenkins, president of the provincial council, also complimented . the branch on its successful year's .work. Officers elected were: — President: Mrs. Harris; vicepresidents: Mesdames Hercock and I. Simpson; ■ secretary : Mrs. E. Graham; treasurer: Mrs. V. Smith; committee : Mesdames Fitchett, Glen-Campbell, E. Graham, H. .A. Howell, W. Howell, Simpson, Wallis, L. Potts, Fitton, Storey, Smith, Sherridan, Hercock, Harris and Miss Kansen. The points prize for the year was won by Mrs. Udy, Snr. The produce from a well stocked stall was sold in aid of parcels for the boys serving in' Japan at present. Mrs. Cottle was the lucky winner of a competition. The best flower competition was won by Mrs, GlenCampbell with Mrs. W. Graham second. Afternoon tea was served and the meeting closed with the singing of the.- National Anthem. The young people of the district gave a very jolly party in "The Dugout" in honour of Mrs. Wolferstan and Mr. Roy Caterer, who ar'e shortly to be married. Dancing provided entertainment for the evening, Mrs. Udy officiating at the piano. The happy couple were presented with a table ofHnlaid. N.Z. wood and a bouquet. Mr. Caterer thanked all for their gifts, and musical honours were. accorded them. There have been "two slight shocks of earthquake' during the past week. * The main beach road has been freshly tarred .and the pot holes filled in. People are finding *the new* butcher's shop, which has recently been opened in the village, a great convenience.
