MEETING A VENTRILOQUIST
APPEARANCE AT WELCOME HOME To-day a "Chronicle" representative had the pleasure of meeting a new Levin resident in the person of Jerry Jones. He was Introduced by Mr. 'Tom Mayne, who said, "He is only a ventriloquist's dummy," whereat Jerry smartly replied, "And, Tom, you are only a dummy ventriloquist." Jer-ry," wearing khaki and New Zealand shoulder flashes, said he had enlisted with Tom in Westport and had been given a public sendoff. Tom said Jerry had gone through the Libyan campaign with him, riding on the back of a machine-gun truck. He had. burnped his way through sand, shot and she.ll to Gazala, just past Tobruk, where Jerry gave a. show for the boys after the battle. Jerry and Tom gave many shows in the Middle East, providing grand entertainment for New Zealanders there, and they are now going to take part in the programme at the Regent Hall to-morrow night in the welcome home to Levin returned servicemen and women. Jerry con-fessed that he was glad to bb back in New Zealand, and was looking forward to the opportunity of welcoming back more of his old digger cobbers at the Regent Hau to-morrow night.
