A Tui] atte-idanco of all members will be appreciated by the match committee. Easter Competition At a recent monthly meeting of the club general cc.nmittee it was drcided to hold an ail-day tourney on Easter Saturday only. As Easter fa'is somewhat later than usual this year and bowls, tennis and other .summer sports will be finalising their activ.ties during this P' riod, it was felt by the committe ■ gf. n» rally that to avoid clashing wiih th. otlier lo.al sports clubs, a one-fiay tourney would prove beneiiciai to a successful effort. A fuli days play for intending play-€-i.i has been mapped out, comprising a 36-hole medal round, with the b st gross and nett scores played in conjunetion, a teams match and a four-hole game. A small entrance f'-o will be charged and competitors will be assured of a splendid day's c" tertainn- ent. It was also planned tentatively to hold a three-day tournament for men members "during the King's Birthday week-end in June, and as this will be in the middle of the golling t?eason. a big number of lreal and visiting players will be ude to avail themselves of the opportunitv of their first post-war goifing holiday tournament. FurLher aetails of the Easter Saturday matches will be publislied la ter for the convenience of intending players, while the June tourney will also be made known when arrangements are fmalised. General Items Local golfers had their first taste of winter golf on Saturday afternoon last, when the scheduled medal round was played for the most pare of the 18 holes in steady rain. Luckily, however, the rain was not enough to hamper the enthusiasrn of the competitors, and practicaliy all finished their round. For so eariy in the season, the greens were vary heavy, and most players found thrmselves unable to sink their putis with consistency. The course and greens were in excellent order, tlie fuli mowing of most of the course being a decided asset and a great hnprovement from tne previous Saturday, when the long grass had more than one player bemoaning the fact of having wandered into the rough. As is common with most of the district, the growth for this time of the year is phenomenai, but the committee hopes to eventually dispense with Ihe grazing that has been the custom for the winter months by regular mowing. As this will depend on the season to a great extent, it is hoped that the cutting, which has givc-n a great sward to the fairways, will be able to be continued with. A new player to the club in the person of D. H. Tomlinson, and a former old club member in C. R. Ilosie, are to be congratulated for splendid rounds on Saturday last. The former is on the limit handicop and futurc rounds as played last wef k should soon see this player being reduced to a higher mark. The latter showed that he has lost none of his former accuracy, and it was indeed a pleasing ellort to break so on his first oflicial round after a long absence from the local rinks. It was also pleasing to have a visit from a former club champion, P. S. Crisp, who played his first game locally after an absence of six years, having just returned from
overseas. Although naturally not in form, he showed gl'impses of his former prowess, and win no douot oe able to improve. greatly on his opening effort. While on tne suojecG of returned servicemen, it is hoped ihat snortly, when several orner remaining ciub members are due to return in the last drafts, an oflicial welcome home will be held to welcome back all memoers who have served overseas. Such a function would be a happy augury for what promises to be the most successful season in the club's history. If keenness is any criterion, many of the new players and newcomers go tne club are going to prove valuable assets to the playing strength oei'ore the season is very far advanced. While at the moment Ghe majority are in the junior grade, many by tlieir efforts will prooably prove surprises in match piay, and several seniors will have to be at their best to hold them safely. It is a well known fact that a ciub is gauged by the strength of its junior players, and the local ciub is very forrunately placed in this respecr. With some 80 odd men members alone, the local committee can look forward confidentiy to a most successful future. Top Dog Trophies Weather conditions were more pleasant on Sunday afternoon when the first challenge match for the trophy was played. The contestants Were the holders, D. E. Clark and C. M. Wallace, who were challenged by L. S. Carmichael and H. W. S. Walker. The holders proved themselves too strong for their opponents, winning by a margin of four and two, The actual match was more even than the scores would indicate. They were all square at the completion of 11 holes, but the holders made their position fairly secure by winning the next three holes, finally winning comfortably. Next week-end the holders will endeavour to notch their second win of the present season, when they meet the challenge issued by H. D. Richards and H. Black.
