WAIROA WANTS TO BE THE CENTRE

-Press Association

NEW HAWKE'S BAY ELECTORATE

Bv Telearavh-

. ... WAIROA, April 9. There is a strong agitation in Wairoa to endeavour to secure tbe centre for tbe Hawke's Bay.'electorate there, All local bodies are behind the move, and. at a meeting of the Wairoa Borough Councii last night the Mayor (Mr. C. V. Chamberlain) , in stating the case for the district, claimed that while Wairoa had easily the- largest population in the electorate, it also had approximately 2,000 more votes in Waikaremoana, where the hydro-elec-tric works are in progress. Then north-west to the Gisborne boundary, a distance of 60 miles, there is a I'arge number of electors which gives the Wairoa area a big major- $ fty so far as the total number of voters is concerned. Geographieally speaking, Wairoa Is- practically in the centre of tbe new extended electorate, and also has a number of political organisations which are adding. their influence to secure the headquarters there. * It is understood that Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P., will contest the Hawke's B.ay seat as the Labour candidate, while it is freely stated tha;t Mr. C. G. Carker will be the official Nationalist Party nominee.
