"CONCERNED." "
THE NEEB FOR MORE RUBBISH REMOVALS . 4 Sir, — As a newcomer to this town, it was with shocked amazement that I learned upon inquiry of there being' a rubbish collection only once in three months. I believed this must be an exaggeration, but I see by a notice in "The Chronicle" that" it is the appalling truth. It seems extraordinary that a councii which apparently has some pride .in Levin should sanction such neglect. of sanitation. In Wellington suburbs there are collections of refuse at least once in three weeks, which is quite infrequent enough, nor do the employees require the tins to be at the gate. In smallertowns -than Levin in which I have lived the rubbish is insufficient to make a weekly collection. LaboUr shortage is the possible excuse; but it: is a poor one and the collection of refuse is. an essential service ahd should be maintained regularly' ahd religiously. In the interests of health alone the ratepayer is entitled to such a return. Flies in Levin are a menaee. They literally swarm every where, nor is it surprising when one considers the number of open rubbish pits that must exist on every property. Even with meticulous care it is quite impossible to keep the refuse from a small household under control and that from a large establishment must mount up and form hundreds of breeding grounds for flies and disease. That such a situation exists is a disgrace to the town, and should it be allowed to continue it will form a permanent mark against the progress of Levin.' Vours ete..
