Trotting Meeting Opened > ' In Showery Weather t The Manawatu Trotting Club's annual meeting was opened at Awapuni on Saturday in unfavourable weather "but the racing was good ancl patrons enjoyed an interesting day's sport, hacking six of the eight winners to favouritism. The attendance was fair and the totalisator turnover, £19,895 10s, was satisfactory considering the counter attractions at Wanganui and Hastings. ContrabcUid was made favourite toi the opouing event but he. broke and lost all cliance at'ter tliey had gone half a niile. Axworthy Htar . was slow away and Port Chalniers and Ilosewaa broke liefore tliey had gone far. Ripley, Ihic's Gift and Cayuse were proinineni to tlie half-niile where Axvvorthy Star nioved up fast to follow Ripley anu Mac's Gift into tlie straight. Ripley broke up on the tuni and Mac's Gifl went on easily to win by ten lengths froni Axworthy Star witli Ripley four lengths furtlier back. Rosewaa was fourth. There was a "huir-line" decisiou m the second raee and Sampford received tlie verdict from (tlen Murrav wliieli had led from the start. The earlv order was (tlen Murrav from Admiral Kraser and I)iana Rose, llaven. tSandiford and Silver Jewel, witli a gap to Speirette. (tlen Murrav and Samliford were elear of Admiral Kraser and Diana Rose as tliey rau to the straight and they went on * to iiglit a desperate linish, Samliford getting to the front a few vards from the line. Admiral Kraser was six lengths away, followed by llaven. Niinry Potts was favourite for the broadway llandicap. Khe won but upjmared to be luckv wlien Rawene Grafton, wlien slie was going like a winner in tlie home streteh, broke and lost ground which made all the dill ercncc. Silver Klasli, ()))aque, Rawene Grattan, Huntingdon Lass aml Nancy l'otts were well buiwhed running to the home turn and Rawene (irattan soon had a usetul lead. Wlien she broke. Nancy Potts swept past to win well by uuder a lengtli from Huntingdon Lass witli a, siniilar margin to Rawene Grattan.! Silver Klash was fourth. There were ouly live starters in tliej big raee, the Woodfield Memorial. but \ il was a great contest. Glen Murrav, after liis early perform ance, was installed - favourite for the Palmerston Handicap. He was" in front all the way. Twice Worthy, Admiral Kraser, Heredity, C'lydeside and Huntingdon Lass followed liim ■ to ihe straight where Glen Murray went on to win by four lengths from Admiral Fraser with two lengths to Huntingdon bass ahead of Heredity. Indian Lad and Rawene Grattan were the favourites for the Publicans' Handicap and Indian Lad scored narrowlv from the fast-linishing Gambler's For tune which appeared a bit unluckv. Indian Lad, Kinal Fancy, Opaque and Daphne Grattan were well bunehed a. the six and half-way down the straight, Gambler's Fortune was ' '■ snowed in " next the rails. Wlien he did get elear he went after Indian Lad with rjj.ro brilliance and was onlv a neck away at the linish. Daphne Grattan was two lengths away third aiul Rawene Grattan was fourth. After her good effort in tlie Woodfield Memorial, Bonny Axwortli was at a good priee in the eoncluding event.
