DISTRICT HORSES WIN AT WANGANUI
Cup to Rink ; Specialist's Sprint
Liglit drizzle in the morning developed into a ateady downpour on Baturday to luake conditions unpleasant for the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Autumn meeting. The trade was not aetually heavy bpt .tended to cut out as the day progressed. With many people in the large attendance eonfined to the shelter of the stands, betting was sofnewhat restrieted; but • the single-pool totalisator liand>led. £40,324: 10s, as against £4:3,938 on the lirst day of the Spring meeting last September. Tliere has been no Autumn meeting at Wanganui ^inge 194:0, wlien the two-day turnover was only £22,851 10s. Favourites were beaten in every raee, i tlioug'h Patunui, Derryogue and Colopier iinished second in their respeetive events to mahe some return to their supporters. Lady Premier neturned over a score in the Westmere Hurdles, and Eobeology double ligures in the Kai Iwi Maiden, wliile Kink (Cup), Gardane and Specialist all paid geucrous prices. Eig Dividend in Hurdles. Voltaire was made a good favourite for ihe Westniore 'Hurdles, but was beaten into fourth place. Ile was an early leader and as he passed th rough the straight the iirst time he was joiued by Mary Jo. Voltaire was not jumping really well and Mary Jo soon took over the runaing, and with Voltaire showed the way along the baek. Xearing the straight Penwilt was moving up smartlv and Lady Premier also was advaneing. Penwilt got to the front, but weakened in the last furloug and Lady Premier finished well enough to win by a lcngtli and a quarter from Penwilt, who was a length and a quarter in front of Mary Jo, with Voltaire a good fourth and Nanook iifth. Gold Claim was never daugerous. The wiunor paid more thau a score. Easy Juvenile Win. Sage King put up 91b. ovcrweiglit and scored a most deeisive win in the Springvale Juvenile Handieap. Court t'rier eauglit the jump-out and lield a leading position all tlie way to the straight, where Enard Bay, White Diamond, Dutcii Orator, Ked Clover, Ladv Burford, Yariant Nig'hl and Eoyal Baron were haudy and Sage King was moving tlirough uext the rails. Court Crier gave way in the last furlong where Bage King liad rcuclied the front and was goiug away, wliile Patu nui was eouiing on the outer. Sage King passed tlie post si.x leugths ahead of Patunui, who easily held oft' Dutcii Orator, who had. ljttie tp sp.are froni Court Crier.. . • 1 Eoheblogy -Conifortablyt' The Kai Ivyi Maiden pro.yedto betbe best of good things for Bol^ologv, who vveht .to the front a long.ivay from hqme' and never looked-. likelv, to be oVerhauledj' /'eventually-' Whiining by live lengths. from Toniahawk, who finished strongiy and eomfartably beat Lady Merit. Persuade beat the rest. Persuade and Lady Merit rau fair races after being po'orly plaeed early. Gardane Again. vfhe V ictbry Hae'k Handieap saw Gardane. add . to her reeent suecesses,! but she had • little to spare. Master (rain, making the early runuing, >3ed tlirough the straight from Bailor Bov, with Kilarnev Boy, Gardane, Greek Cliief, Breezealong and Queen Pluto followiug and Standee last. After pass: ing the live furlongs trardane slipped' to the front and led across tlie top and to the straight from Ivilarney Boy. •Master Cain was still prominent, Queen IMato was moving forward very fast and Breezealong was fairly prominent. Tlie leaders bunched a little at the entrance to the straight, but Gardane did not relinquish her iead and held on to win by a good head from Kilarnev Boy. Queen Plato eould not sustain her long run and was only a fair third, wliile Bailor Boy, who was fourth, just beat Breezealong. , i
Rink at Last. After liiauv disappointments Rink returned to winning form by taking the Wanganui Cup decisivelv. Eink, Blaclc Plato and Master Ted led in line for a great part of the journev. As tlie lield passed tlirough thii-straight with a little more tinui a mile to go ulhers prominent were The Monareh and Finaiu'ial. Eoyal Laneer and Dinlc's t)wn were well baek and Battledress was last. Tlie only importaut ehange along the baek was that Finaneial improved his position. Kearingl the straight Ilulabaloo went after tlie leaders and eovored extra ground in an eudeavour to get to the front. In the run from the distance llulabalob eould not hold Eink, who rau on to a four leugths ' vietory over Finaneial, who Iinished well and beat Hulabaioo by two lengths, while Master Ted was fourth anrl Uink's Own lifth. Eoyai Laneer was never a possibiflty. Fort Eoyal looked well, but did not handle the ground well aad Battledress was hopeiess. Never in Doubt. LM'aster Baron seored an almost all-the-way win in the Tayforth Handieap. Lady Nahleen was iirst out, but Master Baron ran past her at the end of the lirst furlong and soon opened a gap of. a few lengths, wliieh he maintained all along the baek. He was going .well and still nieclv elear erossiug the top, where JDerryogue was setting out to reduee the gap and Broiefort Btar was prominerit. These three had the ilnisli to themselves, Master Baron winning by seven lengths from Derryogue, \vho beat Broiefort Btar by three lengths. Autoseore, near the rear most of the way, Iinished on to be fourth. Parnell in Hack Sprint. Duteh Mary and Grey Donne were the early leaders- iu the Petre Hack Handieap, but ueitlier got into the inonev. . Parnell, always well plaeed, came tlirough iu the straight and won by two and a lialf lengths from Colopier, who got away badly and went roond the leaders on the honie turn. Carmelka iinislied on in third place, a neck away, and just ahead of Grey Donne. Specialist Decisively. Listen ln ancl New Deer made, the running in the Flying Handieap, and as tlie lield approached the straight Specialist was lying third with PoMarama moving past Omahina into fourth place and Tideless andv-The.iolyn i
uext. Po-Marama was four liorses out entering the straight and Specialist, who was ihsiiVe him took charge at tlie last furlong and wou decisively "by live lengths l'roui' Po-Marama who was hard-ridden and beat Tlieiolyn by two and a lialf lengths, jwith Do.nqgal Bav fourth and Foxcatclier iifth.
