v Press Association
By Telegraph — 1
WELLINGTON, April 4. The present output of matches in New Zealand, both wooden and wax, now limits consumption to about two boxes per head of the population eaeh weelc.' The output of the Wellington match factory, according to a report to-day, is estimated at approximately 2,000,000 boxes a week, and the output of the South Island faetory is Teported to be less than this iigure. The present output represents only a small part of the pre-war production. There is no dearth of the raw materials used in the manufacture of matches. It is stated that the present acute shoxtage of matches can be attributed solely to the labour shortage. Licenees have been granted recently for the iinportation of matches up to 75 per cent. of the value of the matches imported in 1938. It is thought lihely that the bulk of these will come from Sweden.
