Mr. Nash recalled that legislation .authority for the payment of this bonus was contained in the Finance Act (No. .2") passed last session. Its pnrpose was to' pfpvide sO'ftie recompenSe for t etire'd eivil s'ervants who had returned to duty dtlring' the waf when their services Were urgently needed, bnt whose stiperannuatioft, in accord With the law, had Deen feducM to ensure that their total income, including salary and superannu1 ation, did not exceed their tfotal ineome When last employed by the Government. The/"bonus commenees from April 1, 1942, and unless the total remuneration (iricltiditig salary, cost of living- bonus and retifing allowance, but excluding overtifiie) does not exceed £500 pef' annum, the amount of the bonus is £52 a year. If the total remuneration exceeds £500, the bonus decreases by £1 for each £1 of the excess until the bonus is reduced to £26 per annum, when it beeotnes a fiat rate at this amount. Th bonus will not in any case be greater than the amount by which the retiring allowances had been reduced. Payments will be made as quickly as possible and will be in respect of eomplete months of re-employmerit during the four-yearly period ending March 31, 1946. -Mr. Nash said he felt that this scheme Would meet equitably the eases of qiiite a large number of Government superannuitants whose experieneed services had been utilised to meet pressiire broUght about by f e war but who hau found theniselves deprivfed of portion ot their retiring allowances by legislation designed to meet conditions of peace time.
