DEFAULTER AS UNIVERSITY LECTURER

Strong e-xception to the reported appointment of an alleged military de faulter as a lecturer at Auckland University College was voiced at an execut tive meeting of the Auckland Returned Services' Association tonight. It was deeided to write immediately to the College Council asking for the full facts, -witli a view to further action be ing taken to sepure his removal. "It has been reported to me that a military defaulter, J. Laird, a man who has been confined in a defaulters' camp, has been appointed as a lecturer at Auckland University College," said Mr. 1\. C. Aekins. "This man is now in a position where he is teaching returned s'oldiers who have served their country, and I unde'rstand he is actually lecturing in philosophy."It was rcsolved to write asking the College Council if J. Laird, a defaulter, was employed at £40Q a year an-i whether he was employed in lecturing on philosophy, where he taught students who included retifmed Servieemeri. It was also resolved that, if the council replied affirming these facts, the association should communicate with- 250 e'x-servicemen attending- Auckland Uai versity College and invite them to cooperate, perliaps by refusing to attend lectures until the man concerned Was re moved.
