Mrs. H. A. Heron left Levin last week to join her husband in Wellington and take up residence there. Mrs. John Ryder and Miss Ryder, of Bath Street, have returned to their home after a holiday in Palmerston North. Miss Ryder- also spent sgme time in Auckland. Advice has been received that Sgt. W. Nicholls, of Levin, who is at present serving in the medical corps of the Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan, has been promoted to the rank of second-lieutenant. Mr. N. R. Jaine§on, chairm'an of the New Zealand Wool Board, and Mr. H. J.. Wardell, a member, will leave for London at the end of this week to attend a meeting' Of the executive committee of the International Wool Secretariat.
The death has occurred of Mr. | Cecil John Hewlett, Remuera, form- j erly sheriff of Auckland and registrar of the Supreme Court. He was 68 years of age. Mr. Hewlett, who gained part of his 'education at the Auckland Grammar School, began his career as a clerk in the Magistrate's Court at Wellington. Before his appointment in 1924 as registrar of the Supreme Court in Auckland, he had filled similar positions in Palmei'ston North and Invercargill,. and had also been clerk of the Magistrate's Court in Auckland. He retired in 1934 after 40 years' service in the Department of Justice. He is survived by his wife. While in Palmerston North, Mr. Hewlett made many friends who will learn (vith regret of his death. He was a most painstaking and efficient official of the Justice Department.
