GIRL MUSICIAN AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP
A Royul Acadeuiv scholarsliip has been awarded to Miss Doris R. Y'eale, 16-year-old daugliter of Mr. aiul JMrs. P. 0. X'eale, New Plymouth, according to information rcceived from the New Zt-uluud reprcsentative of (he Royal Aeademy oL' Music, Londou. The schol- j arship will entitle her to t\vo years of stuily at the aeademy uuder the tuitionS of siune of Euglaiid's most prominentj professors of musie. Miss Veale successfully sat for the performer's diploma, Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Musie, in pianoforte playing last October. Probably the youngest musician in New Zealand e.ver to pass this exainiuatiou, slie so iiupressed the examiuer, j Dr. 0. S. Lang, that he awarded her the i unusually higli marks of 197, only three below the possible, and recouimendsd i 1.er for a %jyai Aeademy Scholarsliip. Dr. Lang stated he had never before) encouiitered sucli accomplishment in oue so young. in addition to passing the pianoforte examinalion Miss Veale passed tlie higher grade 'eello examination, the advaneed grade in singing, bolh with distinction, and the intermed iate grade in violin. At last year's musie festival at Wellington she was awarded a scholarsliip for players under 16 years of age l>y the Wellington (Jompetitions Society, aud also won the 'cello solo class. By attaining the highest marks iu her examination for the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Musie, Miss Veale won the anuual bursary of £10 awarded by the academv. She also passed the aeademy 's grade five writtcn examination in harmonv with distinction.
