Battle Dance's Handicap
CONCLUDING DAY AT AWAPUNI I Changed track conditions proved an upsetting role on tiie second day of the Manawatu Racing Club's Autumn Meeting at Awapuni on Saturday, and backers suffered a reverse when favourites failed to materialise. The feature of the day was the success of the Awapuni trainer, C. J. Thomson, who saddled up three winners in Winning Ticket, Langue d'Or and Arco. The stable horseman, V. J. Sellars, was also seeri to good advantage in being associated with the winning trio. Keen interest was taken in the revival of the Awapuni Gold Cup and, despite there being only four runners, an exciting contest was witnessed. A popular and well deserved victory went to Langue d'Or, who had previously proved himself one of the Dominion's top ranking stayers. Although conditions were uninviting in the morning, the weather developed iine and a good crowd was present. The track was soft after overaight rain. * The totalisator handled £79,755 10s, and brought the total investments for the meeting to £160,715 10s. j There was no corresponding two-day meeting last year. A Bunaway Win. Unluekily defeated the first day rhrough his rider losing an iron, Eiidurance mad e amends by scoring a runaway win in tlie Kairanga Hurdles. The winner run to the front earlv, being foliowed by R:oto Parera, who was jumping badlv, Red Glare, Peaeh King, Ladv Premier and ; Voltaire. At the half-mile Enduranee was' four lengtlis cbuir oi Red Glare, with anotlier gap tu Voltaire, w'lh i'eaeh King and Legai eh'sest of tlu cthers. There was no tlvinge in tlu order entering the i straight and jumping the last hurdle jsplendidly Enduranee cleared out to Iscore l),v a wide* margin. Voltaire came hvith a late effort to beat the tiring Red Glare for second, with Lcgal a poor fourtli. Next to finisli were Lady Premier, PeuwiJt, Epping and Peach King. A Close Finish. The Autumn Plate was run in two divisions and eaeli produced an excitI ing finish. Tn tlie first division Robejology rau through to the lead smartly, j and was foliowed past the half-mile j by f'armelita. Bonny Banks, Culloden I Moor, Hostility and Rergeant .Taek. Approaching the straight Robeologv still showed the way to Bonnv Banks iand t'armelita, with Master Day begin ning to put iii an ' appearanee on the outside, and Culloden Moor. Onoe in the straight the leader stopped quickly, and Carmelita and Master Day were lle.ft in cliarge. ITowever, Culloden Moor tinui put in his claim on the outside and finish ing resolutely got up to liead Master Day on the post. Oarmelifa was a close third, with Rergeanf Jack, Hostility, Flving Dink and Airjpier, who lost ground at the start, next. In the second divisoit, Rheer waS soon in front and showed the way to the straight from Buldana, Winning | Ticket and Persuade with Gay Stitehes jheading the others. Buldana took the i measure of the leader soon after com- ' mencing the run home, but Winning Ticket: then put in a claim, and finishj ing in fine stvle got up to gain a narjnow verdict. Persuade was a moderate i third, just beating Tomahawk. who lcame from well back. Sheer and The oStonnovik were closest of the others. A Good Performance. After being in the lead practically | throughout, Batlie Dance confirmed his Iirst day's form by staying on in great | -style to score a narrow victory in the jprincipal event, the Tamatete Handiicap. Roman Duke and Battle Dance j quickly took up the running to lead out 'of tlie straight front lligh Ideal, Riuk and Sir Raleigli, with Hormu/. bringing j up the rcar. Aloug the back Battle | Dance had sole charge from Riak, I Roman Duke, dropping back, and Higk | Ideal, with Hormuz begiuning to make a forward move. Receiviug a run through on Ihe inside, llonnuz went up to follow tlie leader as tliey raced to ! the straight, with Riuk, Cinna Bay and Hutabaloo handiest of the others. Once in Iine for the judge, Hormuz IhreW out a chalJeiigc, 1 »ut it was shortlivcd, and Hutabaloo tlien fiashed up to run Battle Dance to lialf a liead. Hormuz struggled on to liold off Cinna Bav for third, with Iiink, "Peter's Choiee and Silver Rod next. An Exciting Finisli. The Clo\ erlea Nursery Handicap produced an exciting finish, the iirst four liorses crossing the iine practically abreast. After travelling a furlong Dancing Girl was in front, closely attended by Beau Son, Equitare, Patunui, wide out, Flving Robiu and Sea Fury. Racing to tlie tuni. Beau Son displaced Dancing Girl in the lead, and these were foliowed by Patunui, Sea Fury, Flying Robin and Equitare. On straighteiiing up for the ruu home Sea Fury dashed to the front and just managed to liold lier advantage from Patunui, with Lady Hilton, who, came on the' scene late,' almost in Iine third. The favourite Flying Robin, who did not get clear until tlie last bit, iinished strongly to be right up fourtli, ahead of Prin'ce Fox, Sage King, Dancing Girl and Beau Son. Favourite Fails. In spite of there being only four runners, the Awapuni Gold Cup provided a good contest with the honours definitely with the winner, Langue d 'Or, who outstayed his rivals over the tinal furlong. The favourite Finaneial was disappointing and failed to ilatter his supporters at any stage. Alethea took over the role of paeemaker and showed the way out of the straight to Finaneial and Langue d'Or, with Master Dash a eouple of lengtlis awav. There was no ehange in the order until passing the half-mile, wdiere Master Dash improved his position slightly. Alethea led into the straight, but was
soon tackled by her stablemate, Langue d'Or, who quickly drew away to plaee the issue beyond doubt over the fmal furlong. JViaster Dash iinished better tinui Finaneial for second, with Alethea close up. An Improved Showing. Favourites failed badly in the To Wanaka Handicap, which provided another exciting finish. Landfire took up the early running from Gala Song? Bettermusk, ' Gardane and Peaeetime, with Dark Morning bringing up the rear. Racing to the turn Landiire and Gala Song showed the wav to Bettermusk, with Dark Morning improving his position, and Gardane dropping back. Sustaining his run, Darlc Morning got on terms with the leaders soon after straightening up, and in a punishing finish gained the decision by the narrowest of margins from Gala Song. Almost in Iine Bettermusk gained third from Landiire, with Merry Robin, Peaeetime and Gardane next. Arco Finishes Well. Malcing his iirst appearanee aince winning the Ashhurst Cup, Arco brought off a mild surprise by fmishing too well for the sprinters in the Longburn Handicap. Tuis began smartly, but Derryogue soon lieaded her, and Lhe pair led past the half niile from Voung Margaret, Listen In and Theiolyn. Rounding the turn Young klargaret displaced Derryogue, while PoMarama and Arco were Vieginning to put in an appearanee. Finishiug well Arco wore down Young Margaret over the iinal furlong, wliile Imperial came with a late eifort to be a good third. Theiolyn was next, ahead of Derryogue and Po-Marama, who lost ground on tlie turn. A Remarkable Run. After being at the rear of the field at the three furlongs, Kauri Queen unwound an eleetrifying run on the outside to smother the leaders over the concluding stages of the Lockwood Handicap. Glen Urquhart and Dutch Mary were the early pacemakers from Praire Girl, Cooraclare, Hadrian and Master Gain. The leaders retired at the straight entrance, and Colopier moyed througli to join Cooraclare -soon after straightening up. Just when the former appeared to have the upper hand Kauri Qucen came on. the scene and eventuallv won going away. Cooraclare had little diificulty in holding on for third from Hadrian, Prairie Girl, Trig Pomt and Top Shot. Results: — KAIRANGA HURDLES HANDICAP, £300; 12'miles. •2-1 ENDERANCE, 9.4 (N.
