LORD GORT DEAD
Received Monday, 10.50 a.m. LONDON, March 31. Tlie d"atli occurred in Guy's Hospital oi' Field-Marshai Lora Gort, V.C., D.S.O.. former Com-mander-in-Cinef of .the British Army. Lord Gort underwent a serious operation last Novem'oer. His condition improved slowly after the operation, but his death followed a reiapse. Lord Gort served with distinction Y 1914-18 War, being wounded •x yf mentioned in dispatches n k Lmies and winning the V.C. Berween wars he held several positions of importance on the British Army Starf, and at the outbreak of the Second World War was Chief of the Imperial General Staff. After ieading the B.E.F. in the Battle of France, he retired from this post and was appointed ' Governor of Gibralter. He then served as Governor of Malta, and was High Commissioner for Palestine until Novc mber, 1945, when he returned to England due to the state of his health. r
