CHRISTCHURCH, March 27. "We are wasting the time of the conference; this is the job of the Health Department, " sa,id ilr. H. D. Caro, ilayor of Hamilton, when a remit urging the adoption of a standard by-Jaw proliibiting the hawking of unprotected ice cream witliin au audicorium or passagewavs leading thereto in any theatre canie before the Municipal Conference. The remit was lost by a large majority on the voices. . "We have beeii represented as seoumlrels wlio are trying to prevent the eensuniption of ice cream in tnoatres, " said ilr. II. Green, Mayor of Petone. "We have been misrepresented and niisreported. " ilr. Green explained that there was nc 'ntention of interfering with the couftumption of ice cream in theatres. Ih'j remit aimed to prevent the hawking of unprotected ice cream. The metliod of selling eones of ice cream was unhygenic and dangerous. He had known of cases wliere boys selling ice cream had ik'.ked Ihe tops of the cones in the darkness of the theatre. Trays of ice cream had been left in the aisles, wliere tliey cou'ld be contaminated by dust stirred up by the patrons. He saw no objection to persons buying ice cream at stalls outside the theatre and taking it into the theatre, or in buying ice cream in the theatre provided it was adequately proteeted. A second clause in the remit, aiming to prevent in the same way the leaving of .eordial bottles and other obstructious cn the floor of a theatre. also. remived skort shrii't from the conference. ' • That is a matter for the iire bri;ades," said a member.
